Zimbru Chisinau Shirt, Year Unknown

Comments Off on Zimbru Chisinau Shirt, Year Unknown

This is the shirt I acquired on a visit to Chisinau back in 2006. It is unfortunately a fairly simple shirt, with just four red stripes on either side to betray the plain design. The Zimbru badge is also screen printed on, making this seem like more of a t-shirt than a football shirt. I wish I had been able to acquire one of the Lukoil sponsored Zimbru shirts but, in Moldova at the time, commercially available shirts where hard to find. As it was, this was the only shirt available for sale at the team’s offices. In that sense it is indeed a rare shirt.

Polonia Warsaw 2012-2013, Home Shirt Dziewicki 5

I got this shirt during the Polonia-Korona Kielce match I attended on a cold November night in Warsaw. It was just my luck to find a girl selling shirts across from the sausage stand behind one of the goals during the half time break. The gold accents in the form of Hummel’s traditional chevrons serve as a nice contrast to the black background. The sponsors and the number 5 and name of Polonia legend Piotr Dziewicki are all screen printed onto a very quality fabric. Indeed, this shirt’s fabric was much better than that of the other Hummel shirts on offer for some reason. Interestingly, Dziewicki played two seasons in Turkey for Antalyaspor before returning to Poland. He is currently the coach of Polonia Warzsawa.

Legia Warsaw 2012-2013, Away Shirt

This shirt was purchased in the Legia shop at the team’s Pepsi Arena. The shirt is a nice modern Adidas design, sporting the team’s classic “L” badge. The Active Jet and Krolewskie sponsors are professionally applied in a felt-like material, and the red accents on the sleeves and collar match well with the sponsor–many shirts are ruined when the sponsor looks out of place. The fact that this shirt is in the team’s traditional green makes this a good addition to the collection, even if it is not vintage (Legia have some amazing vintage designs as can be seen at oldfootballshirts.com).

Skonto Riga 1996-1997, Home Shirt 27

A classic Adidas design from the mid 1990s in the same vein as the Levski Sofia shirt seen here. I got this one from a fellow collector since I just didn’t think that the Skonto shirt I got at the Skonto Stadium was really representative of the team—after all, the maroon color used for this design is the same maroon of the Latvian flag. The “27” here is screen printed onto the shirt’s fabric, which is the standard Adidas fabric from the era.

Latvia 1994-1995, Away Shirt 10

After visiting Latvia (and gaining a love for the country) I was lucky enough to come across this beautiful shirt for sale on the internet. It is truly a stunning one, as many of the Adidas “basket weave” patterned shirts are (think Germany’s 1994 World Cup shirt) when the national colors are arranged perfectly around the collar. The Black and maroon look great on the white background, and the small details—like the Adidas writing in the numbers on the back—make this shirt even more special. The badge is embroidered onto the shirt, while the numbers on the front and back are screen printed in a quality material.

Red Star Belgrade 2007-2008, Home Shirt Tutoric 13

This shirt came from the shop in the Marakana. I had asked who the best player is and the girl working gave me a look that showed absolutely no emotion before handing me Dorde Tutoric’s number 13 shirt. I wasn’t necessarily offended, I figured it was just the Serbian way. The design is a simple Nike template with “Toyota” screen printed across the front, while the back has the Serbian National Bank sponsorship screen printed on along with the Tutoric name set and number 13. One special note for Turkish football fans–after I got this shirt I learned that Tutoric was transferred to Turkish side Kocaelispor where he played for one season before returning to Belgrade.

Sigma Olomouc 1998-1999, Home Shirt

I got this shirt way back in high school way before ever setting foot in the Czech Republic—I think it was the Mazda sponsorship that had attracted me since the number one thing on my mind back then had been getting a car. The shirt is a very standard Adidas fabric and I have half a mind to think that the Sigma Olomouc details are heat pressed onto this Adidas template from the era by someone in a back room with a heat press machine. After all, I feel like if I wash this one too many times the writing will all peal off and I’ll be left with a blue Adidas shirt! Turkish football fans will remember Sigma Olomouc for their 7-1 thrashing of Fenerbahce in the 1991-92 UEFA Cup. The team have since fallen far; currently they play in the Czech second division.
